Study on Improvement of the Level of Service Criteria for Pedestrian Walkways Considering Shy Distances from Walls

Abstract

This study examined the limitations of the pedestrian walkway capacity and level of service (LOS) standards presented in the Highway Capacity Manual(2013), which tend to underrepresent the actual pedestrian environments. Based on field-observed data, the study quantified the shy distances that reflect the pedestrians’ psychological and behavioral tendencies and applied them to calculate the effective walkway width. Using this approach, the relationship between the pedestrian density and flow rate was analyzed, and a new set of LOS thresholds was proposed to reflect the real-world pedestrian flow characteristics. These findings highlight the feasibility of establishing a more precise, pedestrian-centered evaluation framework.
