An Empirical Study on the Fuel-Saving Effects of Smart Cruise Control-Based Driving Modes : Experimental Validation by Vehicle Type, Road Grade, and Speed
Abstract
This study examined the impact of smart cruise control (SCC) mode on the fuel efficiency and emission characteristics of vehicles, aiming to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions through the diffusion of eco-driving practices. The driving experiment was conducted on the Daeguoegwaksunhwan Expressway, a continuous-flow road, and National Route 25, an intermittentflow road, and compared the SCC mode with the general driving for small, medium, and large gasoline vehicles. Driving data were collected in real-time through a vehicle scanner, and the statistical significance was evaluated using a corresponding sample t-test and Wilcoxon test. The analysis showed that the improvement in fuel efficiency in SCC mode was significant for medium and large vehicles, particularly under 60 km/h and 80 km/h conditions. The effect was more pronounced on continuous roads with low signal interference. In the case of exhaust gas, the overall trend was reduced when driving in SCC mode in small and large vehicles. The results show that the SCC system can simultaneously achieve fuel efficiency and environmental performance in a real road environment.
