Analysis of Saturation Flow Rate Variations and Derivation of Adjustment Factors at Signalized Intersections under Varying Autonomous Vehicle Penetration Rates

Abstract

Recently, the impacts of Autonomous Vehicle(AV) adoption on traffic systems have attracted growing interest, reflecting the growing beed for quantitative analysis of roadway capacity changes. This study analyzed how changes in AV penetration rates affect capacity at signalized intersections under interrupted flow conditions. It also proposed a methodology for deriving adjustment factors for the saturation flow rate. Using the microscopic traffic simulator VISSIM, vehicle headways and saturation flow rates were examined across different AV penetration scenarios. The results showed that higher AV penetration rates led to shorter saturation headways and higher saturation flow rates. These findings provide useful insights for forecasting roadway capacity and developing traffic operation strategies during the early stages of AV deployment. Nevertheless, the simulation-based nature of this study and its focus on passenger vehicles pose limitations. Future research should therefore consider a wider range of vehicle types, dynamic signal operations, and various intersection designs to enhance applicability.
